Metal detectors are being used at J.P. Taravella High School as part of a new pilot program by Broward County Public Schools.
Summer school students began using the walk-through metal detectors last week at the Coral Springs school. Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines also installed the machines for its summer session.
BCPS officials said the technology – which can detect guns, knives, and other metal weapons – is meant to enhance safety and add an extra layer of protection for students and staff.
“We are very excited for both schools now that we have these weapon detectors in place,” Broward School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff said during a visit to Flanagan Monday. “This safety initiative has been a priority for our entire school board, with the rollout continuing at our [other] high schools starting in the upcoming school year.”
BCPS schools began using metal detector wands for random screenings of students in 2022.
