Harold Andres Zamorano Jr. {BSO}
A Coral Springs man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he chased an off-duty law enforcement officer through city streets at high speeds while armed with a handgun.
According to Coral Springs Police Department records, Harold Andres Zamorano Jr., 27, was arrested on February 21 following what investigators described as a dangerous series of events that began in the early morning hours and ended at the Coral Springs Police Department.
Police say the incident began around 4:49 a.m. when an off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officer observed a silver Porsche – later identified as Zamorano’s vehicle – traveling erratically northbound on Pine Island Road in Tamarac.
After both vehicles entered Coral Springs, the officer reported seeing the Porsche strike a white vehicle traveling southbound on Coral Springs Drive near Northwest 6th Street. The officer made a U-turn to investigate the crash scene, at which point, according to the affidavit, the Porsche abruptly turned around and began aggressively accelerating toward the officer’s vehicle.
Investigators say the officer feared he was about to be intentionally struck and took evasive action, at one point driving into oncoming lanes of traffic on West Atlantic Boulevard to avoid a collision. The affidavit states the Porsche continued pursuing the officer at speeds over 70 miles per hour.
The officer activated emergency lights and radioed for assistance while heading toward the Coral Springs Police Department. The pursuit ended at the south entrance gate of the station, where officers conducted a felony traffic stop and detained Zamorano without incident.
A search of the Porsche uncovered a black handgun on the driver’s side floorboard underneath the seat.
Zamorano was transported to Broward Health Coral Springs for medical clearance before being booked at the Broward County Main Jail.
Court records show he is being held pending his first court appearance.
