Talk Media’s local online publications won five awards at this year’s Florida Press Club event on February 1 in Ocala, Florida.
The event marked the 75th anniversary of the club’s founding as the Florida Women’s Press Club. This club got its start thanks to female journalists who were not eligible for membership in the existing press club, according to FPC President Anne Geggis.
The evening’s keynote speaker was Vivienne Serret, a race and equity reporter at The Independent Florida Alligator. She drew national attention by exposing how the school president, Ben Sasse, had hired holdovers from his time in the Senate.
Talk Media’s goal is to bridge the gap left by newspapers. Based in Coral Springs, it was started in 2010 and expanded to include Tamarac Talk in 2011, Coral Springs Talk in 2012, Parkland Talk in 2017, Margate Talk, Coconut Creek Talk in 2022, and Sunrise Talk in 2024.

According to Geggis, The Villages Daily Sun was honored with the Florida Press Club’s top award at its annual gala Saturday night for its coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, detailing how 90% of the storm’s fatalities fell on senior citizens, disabled, homeless, or migrant workers.
The Frances DeVore Award for Public Service was awarded to the newspaper staff for their efforts in telling the individual stories of thousands of vulnerable residents who were caught in the state’s gaps in disaster response. The newspaper found that the death toll from the catastrophe was 15% greater than the government’s public accounting.
The club’s other top honor, the Lucy Morgan Award for In-Depth Reporting, honored “Born to Die,” a South Florida Sun Sentinel Story about Black infant mortality, the Bradenton Herald’s coverage of the Manatee County wetlands, and “Sacred Scheme” from The Florida Trident, which exposed the abuse of state funds at pregnancy crisis centers.
