On Wednesday, J.P. Taravella and Coral Springs Charter wrestling teams competed in the District Dual Championship at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale.
This was the first time Head Coach Eric Perez had the chance to face another team from Coral Springs.
“It was a lot of fun to wrestle against Taravella, and it was even more amazing to see the kids wrestle with more intensity than normal,” Perez said. “I think they were excited knowing they were going against another hometown school.”
The Panthers picked up a 57-18 win with Eduard Shmandura, Elijah Perez, Jaiden Valentin, Gavin Muniz, Trenton Brown Hunter Perez, Peter Mocco Keon Taylor, Brandon Hankerson, and Ameer Salah all picking up wins for CSC. Elijah, Hunter, and Taylor all finished the day 3-0, while Shmandura, Sarah Valentin, Brown, and Mocco all won two matches in the tournament.
The Panthers also defeated American Heritage 60-18 before falling to Cardinal Gibbons High School in the final. They will next compete in the Gillis Strong Invitational starting on Friday, Dec. 16, at Archbishop McCarthy High School.
Since the Panthers finished in second place, they will now advance and face defending State Champions Jensen Beach early next year.
JPT’s wins came from Abraham Ballesteros, Andrew Hines and Tariq Qaiyim against Coral Springs Charter. The Trojans also beat American Heritage as a team.
