Taravella Track and Field Team Earns Second Place at Kickoff Meet

Samira Belizaire set a record for the J.P. Taravella High School Track and Field team in the triple jump on February 21.
A junior, she won first place and the record with a jump of 10.86’ at the Rocky Gillis Legacy Kickoff Classic at Coral Springs High School. Belizaire also competes in the 400- and 800-meter runs and 4X400 relay. “I was excited to win and set a school record, and I love competing in track and field,” she said.
The girls’ and boys’ teams’ scores were combined at this meet, and Taravella finished second out of 23 teams. The Dillard track team earned first place, and Coral Springs High took third place, according to Coach Dawn Spann.

The Taravella boys performed well. Scardy Fils won the 800-meter run with a time of 1.58 and JahRee Pierre finished second at 1.59. Joshua Reneau earned second place in the 400-meter run.
The 4X800 relay team, consisting of Fils, Reneau, Pierre, and Craig Dennis, won first place with a time of 8.03, and the 4X400 relay team, consisting of Fils, Reneau, Pierre, and Travis Dillon, earned first place in the 4×400.

The girls’ runners performed well, with Timya Johnson achieving second place and a personal best of 25.3 in the 200-meter run and fifth place and a personal best of 59.88 in the 400-meter run. Valentina Castillo earned third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2.34.
Spann is optimistic about this year’s team. “We had a good meet on Saturday, but have to continue working hard to improve,” she said.
