On April 23, Coach Mark Montimurro, Rocky Gillis, and the late Jason Stein were officially inducted into the “Champs Sports Homefield Wall of Game” in Pembroke Pines, which honors individuals who positively impact the community.
As coach of the Coral Springs Charter softball team, Montimurro has won seven state championships. He picked up his 500th career win a year ago and has coached dozens of players who have gone on to play in college.
Stein was the athletic director at J.P. Taravella since 2011 and also coached varsity baseball. In 2020, he passed away due to complications of COVID-19, but his memory is not forgotten.
“Jason Stein was one of the greatest people I’ve ever known,” said Montimurro. “He was genuine, warm, loyal, and great to work with. My driver’s ed days, working as his number two are among my favorites, and I mean ever. I miss him every day and think about him often.”
Gillis has been the District Athletic Director for 20 years and was also the principal at Pompano Beach High School for five. His roles include supervising safety and security, all-star games, Big-8, coach mentoring, coaches certification, gender equity, high school athletic directors, scholar-athlete banquets, and SIM plan uniforms/branding research.
