Joe Giummule, head coach of the J.P. Taravella baseball team, came into the 2022 season knowing that he had a special group of seniors who have helped the Trojans continue one of their most historical seasons.
The Trojans threw a perfect game on senior night and honored 17 players on April 26: Leandro Beltran, Jassiel Valbuena, Matt Rubin, Ronald Martinez, Josh Boyd, Jordan Edwy, Devin Gritz, Vincent Samuel, Bryan Brooks, Derek Rodriguez, Elijah Hood, Jacob Smith, Edgar Marquez, Aris Rivera, Tyler Gray, Ryan Meekins, and Chris Scinta.
JPT picked up a 10-0 win for their 19th victory of the season. Coach Giummule called it the nicest senior night celebration he has been a part of in 20 years.
“I’m really happy for the seniors and especially happy for the parents,” Coach Giummule said. “Senior night is more for the families than anyone else. The booster club did an amazing job preparing for senior night. I just sat back, hugged parents, took some pictures, and coached the game.”
Gritz made the start on the mound and pitched three hitless innings. Smith and Boyd combined to strike out four in the perfect game. Offensively, Coach Giummule got at-bats for 11 different seniors. Marquez, Rubin, and Scinta had two RBIs, while Gritz and Hood had one. Boyd, Brooks, Edwy, Gritz, Hood, Marquez, Rubin, Samuel and Valbuena scored runs.
It was also the team’s 19th win of the season, which happens to be the number of the late Jason Stein.
I’d have to think he was looking down on us once again,” Giummule added. “Like who throws a perfect game on senior night?”
Next, the Trojans will compete in the District Tournament as the number two seed. The Trojans will play the winner of Coral Springs High School and Deerfield Beach in the semifinals. If they were to win, they would likely get a chance to play Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the District Final after their thrilling win earlier this season.
