Forest Hills Elementary Scores Big in Miami Heat Energy Challenge

Forest Hills Elementary School was honored by Broward Public Schools for earning second place in the Miami Heat’s “How Low Can You Go?” Challenge.

This annual competition encourages schools to reduce their energy and water consumption throughout the year. Forest Hills reduced electrical consumption by 14 percent from the previous year, saving 47,901 kilowatt hours and avoiding a cost of $4,790, according to assistant principal Derrick Huff.

“Every morning, we tell teachers to turn off the lights in unoccupied spaces. We try to be custodians of the earth, and this was a surprise,” said Huff.

Forest Hills was honored during a Heat game, and it received a poster. Two teachers and two teacher assistants represented the school at the game. According to Huff, the poster was placed on a fence outside the school.
