Coral Springs Charter has always developed terrific pitchers, and Courtney Wahlbrink becomes the latest following her commitment to the University of Ohio.
“It feels great, like a weight off my shoulders from all these years, Wahlbrink said.” But with the relief, I know it only just now gets started for me, and I have to keep working hard.”
Wahlbrink started playing travel softball when she was eight and competed for the Coral Springs Panthers before switching to Power Black a few years later. She is also only a junior and has been on the varsity team with coach Mark Montimurro since she was in eighth grade.
She has gone 41-4 on the mound while pitching to an ERA of .69. Wahlbrink has also added one save and has struck out 389 batters in 264 innings. Offensively, she is a lifetime .322 hitter with two career home runs and 32 RBIs while the team has won 74 games.
“Playing for Coach Mark for the past five years has been great,” Wahlbrink added. “I can’t picture myself at any other high school. He knows a lot about softball, and I deeply respect him and have learned a lot from him. I love the girls on this year’s team, and we all have such a sisterly bond, so it makes us even stronger as a team.”
For college, Wahlbrink fell in love after setting foot on campus. She was also familiar with the coaching staff and says the current players on the teams have a family feel.
Wahlbrink still has two years left on the varsity team and hopes to improve on the mental aspect of the game.
“I know I can do it, but sometimes I need to be better at accepting criticism and pushing myself,” Wahlbrink said.
In college, Ohio University competes in the Mid-American Conference and won 37 games a season ago, its third straight season with a winning record.
