The J.P. Taravella High School Navy JROTC program achieved a significant honor at a recent academic competition at Nova High School.
The Trojans Battalion earned second place in an academic competition among 16 schools from the region in mid-November. The cadets were tested on a variety of topics, including naval history and operations.
“We got together and had study sessions so we could learn the material,” said Oliver Luscombe, a senior cadet. He earned third place as an individual in the academic competition at a larger event at Boca Raton High School.
Members of the Trojans Battalion will compete against 32 Navy JROTC teams in a state competition in January.
Tyler Vincent, a cadet who competed in the academic competition, is proud of his team. “We would get together and study our textbooks to prepare, and it was a good feeling to do well,” he said.
The Trojans Battalion has a new commander, Adonica Johnson, senior naval instructor. She is working with the cadets to help them achieve success. They are preparing for an upcoming color guard competition.
“I want to develop our color guard program to prepare for upcoming competitions,” said Johnson.
