New Band Director Plans to Lead Coral Springs High School to Greatness

Coral Springs High School has a new band director.

Chad McPhee took over the Colts band program in March and is committed to making it Florida’s top high school marching and concert band.

“I want to develop strong musicians and even better people. I want to rebuild and revive the Coral Springs band legacy and bring it to a state of excellence,” said McPhee.

He has plenty of personal experience with a top band program. As an alumnus of the FAMU “Marching 100,” considered one of the most demanding marching band programs in the nation, McPhee knows how a successful band program is run. He played the tuba and led about 25 tuba players.

“FAMU trained me well. I took many music education and fundamentals courses,” said McPhee.

He wants to focus on teaching the basics of music and will work to ensure that each student learns to play an instrument well. He wants to encourage students from nearby middle schools to attend Coral Springs High and join the Colts band program.

A product of Broward County public schools, McPhee graduated from South Broward High School in 2017. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in music from FAMU in 2023. Most recently, he came from Pahokee High School in Palm Beach County, where he led the band program.

This spring, the Coral Springs ensembles did not participate in the district music performance assessment, which is something McPhee has promised to change. However, some band students earned the opportunity to participate in a state-level assessment: Landon Gallman earned an excellent grade on French horn, Jackson Sankey earned a superior on tuba, and Sebastian Rapetti earned superiors on both flute and piccolo.
