The winter season of sports wrapped up following Coral Glades’ competing in the District Championship, while the Jaguars also picked up wins in a pair of rivalry matchups.
Basketball
The Jaguars ultimately defeated Christopher Columbus High School, 76–58, in the Regional Finals, but put together one of the strongest seasons in the city, finishing with 21 wins and capturing another District Championship. Coral Glades earned the title with victories over Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Park Vista Community High School before continuing its postseason success with regional wins against West Broward and Miami Palmetto Senior High School.
Lacrosse
Coral Glades earned the victory Monday behind a strong offensive performance. Mauricio Leja led the Jaguars with four goals and an assist, while Eldon George and Emmanuele Franchini each added two goals. Nicolas Insua recorded a goal and an assist, and Zaffer Shariefeh and Julian Horner also found the net. Goalkeeper Dillan Boueye finished with eight saves. The Jaguars followed with a 14–3 win over South Plantation High School before closing the week with a 7–1 loss to Seminole Ridge High School.
Coral Glades now sits at 3–5 on the season after previously defeating CSHS 7–4 in the season opener. The Jaguars will next face West Broward High School on Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. The girls’ team is 4-2 and beat Seminole Ridge High School in their last game. They have also beaten South Plantation, West Boca Raton, and Cooper City High School this season.
The Colts earned their first win of the season against South Plantation High School behind six goals from Matt Jean Baptiste. Tyler King scored three goals, Jaylen Hernandez added two, and Cooper Waldman contributed three assists. The Colts also defeated Dillard High School 6–4 on Friday and will face them again on Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m.
Softball
The softball matchup between the two schools lasted only three innings as Coral Glades rolled to a 17–0 victory. Elora Operle led the offensive surge with a home run and four RBIs. Alena Bell drove in three runs, while Addison Schwartzberg added two RBIs. Rylee Mello and Mia Cuppo each drove in a run.
Haleigh Thomas and Schwartzberg combined to pitch three perfect innings in the circle. Coral Glades followed with a 5–1 win over Park Vista Community High School. Thomas threw a complete game, allowing just one run while striking out eight. Elisa Salas added two RBIs and stole three bases.
The other big-time rivalry game featured Coral Springs High School and J.P. Taravella, with the Colts winning 31–21. The Trojans earned their third win of the season after previously scoring at least 23 runs in victories over Piper and Hollywood Hills High School. Their only loss came against Pompano Beach High School earlier this season. J.P. Taravella will next play Charles W. Flanagan High School on Monday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. The Colts are now 0–3 after also losing to South Plantation High School in their season opener and will return to action Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m.
