The Coral Springs Charter Panthers softball team is now one win away from a state championship after a dominant 14-0 semifinal victory on Thursday.
The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule, as the Panthers scored early and never slowed down. CSC jumped out to a fast start with four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Gio Gurgel.
Bree Martinelli later added a two-run double in the inning to extend the lead. The Panthers then broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning before adding three more in the fourth. Gurgel finished with two doubles, a home run, and five RBIs, while Martinelli added another RBI. Gyensynn Courtney drove in two runs, and Cameron Thiele and Iyralynn Courtney each recorded an RBI.
Courtney Wahlbrink delivered another outstanding performance in the circle, allowing just two hits while striking out six batters to help secure the Panthers’ 23rd win of the season.
“Gio’s big blast got us going, then we just kept rolling after that,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “It’s very unusual to win a State Final Four game by double digits. It was a solid performance all the way around.”
The Panthers will now face the winner of Eustis High School in the State Championship game on Friday, May 22, at 4 p.m. Eustis the third seed and knocked off second seed Wakulla High School 14-7 in their last game. They come in with a record of 22-6 this season.
