The Coral Springs High School esports program has garnered significant recognition this year and is establishing a strong reputation.
In early May, the Colts won first place in the Broward County Rocket League competition for the third consecutive time at Nova Southeastern University.
The Rocket League competition is an entirely online, three-on-three game. The competitors direct a car to kick a ball and score goals that count for one point. It is similar to soccer and involves comparable team strategies, according to Jason Freedman, who coaches esports.
“I have been able to get the kids to practice and gel as a team, and we are proud of winning the county championship,” said Freedman.
The esports team members love to compete in video games. Ethan Bayer, a junior, was on the Colts winning team. “I love cars, and I love soccer, and through esports, I can do both with the online game. It was a great feeling to win,” he said.
The Colts also won the Minecraft Build Battle, a three-round competition where they had to build a sustainable, climate-resilient city in a Florida setting. Using engineering techniques, they built the best city out of the Broward competitors.
For the second round, the team had to build a dam structure in the Everglades that would not interfere with the natural habitat. The Colts had the best solution out of four Broward schools and earned a trip to the championship in March, where they competed against the best team from Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade County.
For the championship, Coral Springs had to show how they would design and build a climate-resilient high school. They presented their design to a panel of technology experts. “I am proud of the students’ ability to design, build, and present their vision in a high-pressure environment,” said Freedman.
Next year, Freedman will continue developing the esports program and hopes to continue winning. He will encourage students to work together and learn the latest computer technology.
“We have students who are earning college scholarships to compete in esports,” said Freedman.
