Coral Springs Produces 2 More District Champions: Seniors Recognized

The playoffs officially began in volleyball, softball, and baseball, with two teams winning a District Title while others also honored their seniors.

Coral Springs Charter recognized seniors Caua Pinto, Aadith Arancherry, Ty Mainardi, Sergio Mejia Monnar, John Clarke Wong, James Camacho, and Jalen McGregor before they went on also to win a District Championship.

The Panthers began the season 5-0 and went 12-6 in the regular season before beating Coral Glades in the opening round of the District Tournament in three sets. They then went the distance against Marjory Stoneman Douglas and pulled out a five-set win for their first title in school history in five sets: 25-22, 28-25, 25-16, 29-27, 15-8. Sergio Mejia Monnar led the team with 21 kills, while Jalen McGregor had six blocks.

Coral Springs High School honored John Decelstino, Mark Saintelus, Quinton Ehrenberg, Tyler Aiello, Malachi Daly, and  Connor Moore. They beat Deerfield Beach High School in four sets before falling in five in the final 24-26,13-25, 25-19, 25-19,16-14. Joel Jobi and Tyler Aiello combined for 31 kills, while John Delcestino had 47 assists.

The Colts had a dominant start to the season, winning their first nine games, but they had a two-game and three-game losing streak. The Panthers beat Coral Springs Charter in their final home game on April 19 after beating Pine Crest in five sets the day before. They followed that up with wins over Hallandale and Boyd H. Anderson High School.

J.P. Taravella won its first game of the season but lost four straight. However, it is 6-6 this year and has wins over South Plantation, Boyd Anderson, Coral Glades, Coconut Creek, and Northeast High School.

The Coral Glades volleyball team did not feature any seniors and finished the regular season with two victories against South Plantation and Plantation High School. The Jaguars went the distance against Cooper City and took a set off Nova High School.

Softball

Coral Springs Charter won a District Championship in softball, outscoring their opponents 20-0 in their two games. The Panthers beat Pine Crest and Cardinal Gibbons to improve to 24-3 this year.

Coral Glades stunned Marjory Stoneman Douglas in their first playoff game behind a no-hitter from Hayleigh Thomas. She struck out 15 while Briana Escobar and Alyssa Denscmore had RBIs. Dilynn Douge and Cameron Marques also had two hits before Coral Glades lost in the final against Western High School 4-1.

J.P. Taravella faced off against Coral Springs High School in their opening playoff game, with the Trojans winning 15-0. Rehab lost 15-0 against Western in their next game and went 6-11 this year. The Lady Colts had only one win in their final regular season game against Deerfield Beach High School, 26-12.

Baseball

The Coral Springs High School baseball team honored their seniors, Andrew Allison and Joseph Martinelli, before falling in the opening round of the postseason against Monarch High School 2-0. Ruben Zuany finished with three of the team’s six hits, while R Guthrie also had two hits, as the Colts finished the season 7-18. Coral Springs Charter fell 4-3 against St. John Paul II Academy and ended the season 14-10. Nolan Mianowski scored two runs, while Reid Sadic had one RBI.

Coral Glades was shut out 4–0 against Charles W. Flanagan High School in the opening round and finished the season 11-11, while J.P. Taravella lost 6-0 against Western High School and closed the season out with six losses in their final seven games despite winning 15 games. These teams will await the rest of the District Playoffs to see if they qualify for Regionals.
