The high school baseball season is officially underway, with J.P. Taravella one win away from winning the BCAA Tier 1 Tournament.

They are set to face a familiar opponent in Marjory Stoneman Douglas on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Nova High School. After JPT beat the Eagles in the HSBN First Pitch Elite Tournament to start the 2022 season, MSD won the District Final and matchup in the Regional Semifinals to secure their second straight State and National Championship

In their opening game against Cardinal Gibbons, JPT fell behind 7-0 but scored at least one run in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth inning Nate Carroll plated a run with a sacrifice fly. EJ Burns walked with the bases loaded in the fourth before Jonathan Lopez recorded a three-run double. Jacob Tannenbaum then tied the game in the fifth with a two-run double.

The Trojans took the lead on back-to-back bases-loaded walks at the bottom of the sixth. Michael Ghann earned the win in relief, pitching four scoreless. Anthony Quigley earned the save as JPT moved to 1-0 for the fourth straight year.

JPT then had another comeback win on Wednesday against St. Thomas Aquinas High School. After falling behind 4-0, ten Trojans scored a run in the fifth and four in the sixth to take the lead. Carrol once again knocked in two RBIs. Alexander Rivera, Tyler Morgan, and Lopez all had one, while Anthony Tizol recorded the win in relief.

The Trojans are coming off another historic season where they reached the Regional Semifinals. Despite having 17 players graduate, two pitchers officially made their college debut. Chris Scinta pitched a scoreless inning for the University of Miami, while Jacob Smith made the start on Saturday for Pacific University. Also, 2022 graduates Vincent Samuel and Matt Rubin are both hitting over .3oo at Indian River State, while Samuel has hit five home runs.
