The City of Coral Springs and three neighboring water providers will temporarily change their water chlorination process from July 13 through July 27 as part of a routine maintenance program recommended by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
The temporary change will affect customers served by the City of Coral Springs Utilities & Engineering Division, Royal Waterworks, the Coral Springs Improvement District and the North Springs Improvement District.
During the two-week period, customers may notice a stronger chlorine taste or odor in their tap water. The city said the temporary change is not harmful to public health.
Water main flushing will also take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. throughout the maintenance period. Residents may experience temporary drops in water pressure or discolored water while crews flush fire hydrants.
According to the city, the flushing program helps remove mineral deposits and sediment that can build up in water mains over time while also ensuring fire hydrants are operating properly for emergency response.
Officials recommend residents check that water is clear before using it for drinking, cooking or laundry. Customers who notice discolored water should run cold water from all faucets for five to 10 minutes. If the problem continues, they should contact their water provider.
Residents undergoing kidney dialysis should consult their physician for guidance during the temporary chlorination period. Owners of tropical fish or other aquatic animals are encouraged to contact a pet store for advice, while customers with inline water filtration systems should consult their equipment manufacturer for operating recommendations.
Officials also suggest that anyone sensitive to the taste or odor of chlorine keep an open container of tap water in the refrigerator, allowing the chlorine to dissipate naturally. The water should be replaced weekly.
