High School football is officially underway, with a pair of Coral Springs teams playing in the Kickoff Classic this weekend.
Coral Springs Charter played American Delray Heritage in their exhibition game and fell 44-14 on Thursday. The Panthers are coming off a season where they went 4-6 and will open up against NSU University in their first game on August 25 at 7 p.m. The Sharks were 6-4 last year and beat CSC beat 13-9 in the season opener in 2022.
Coral Glades‘ game against Fort Lauderdale High School was called at halftime due to lightning, with the Jaguars down 14-0 on Friday. They begin the new season with a new coach Rocco Casullo, who previously won multiple State Championships at St. Thomas Aquinas.
“We just want to see how kids go out and compete, and that’s what they did,” Casullo said. “It’s very hard to practice in the gym every day. The only time we have got our was our two Saturday morning practices and briefly for a couple of evenings.”
Their first regular season game will be Thursday, August 25, at South Plantation High School. The Paladins went 7-3 last year and recorded a 27-18 win in their only meeting last year, while Coral Glades had three wins.
Coral Springs High School and J.P. Taravella did not play in scrimmages but are set to begin their season. The Colts, under first-year Head Coach Eddie Brown, will play Piper on August 1 at 7 p.m., featuring former Marjory Stoneman Douglas Head Coach Quentin Short. The Trojans also have a new coach in Yapphet Butler and will play Everglades on Friday, August 25, at 4 p.m. in their first game after the Gators won 44-0 in 2022.
