Alicia York has a passion for music and playing the viola.
In addition to her passion for music, York’s dedication has earned her all-county and all-state honors for her work on the viola in the J.P. Taravella orchestra program.
“I enjoy performing music, and I have put a lot of effort into practicing the viola. Qualifying for all-state was an amazing experience, and I got to perform with other talented musicians in Tampa,” said York.
This commitment to excellence was reflected recently when Taravella’s concert orchestra and chamber orchestra both earned superior ratings at the Florida Orchestra Association District 15 Concert Music Performance Assessment at Flanagan High School on March 10.
The concert orchestra earned a superior rating and a perfect score in sight-reading. The chamber orchestra received straight superior ratings from the judges, according to Linda Cartagena, director.
Student conductors Daniel Valera and Matthew Cardichon, who conducted prepared pieces, both earned superior ratings.

Cartagena noted that the leadership, musicianship, and courage of the student conductors on the podium made everyone incredibly proud. She emphasized that the students represented the program with outstanding focus and professionalism.
Being a member of the Taravella orchestra is demanding but rewarding. Emma Perez, who plays the violin, is in both orchestras and earned a superior rating at a recent solo ensemble. She qualified for the all-county orchestra, which performed at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts.
“It was a great experience to be part of the all-county orchestra and perform with talented musicians,” said Perez.
Ariana Rose, who plays the violin, was part of both orchestras and qualified for all-county. “I love playing the violin, and it was exciting to be part of the all-county orchestra,” she said.
Cardichon loves being a student director and said he was proud of what they accomplished at the music performance assessment.
