How youth soccer should be run in Coral Springs was discussed at a March 26 commission workshop.
The commission has agreed to issue another request for proposals (RFP) for the travel and development soccer program by the end of next week. Any organization interested in running travel soccer in Coral Springs can respond to this request.
During the workshop, Deputy City Manager Bradley McKeone made a presentation on youth soccer in the city. For the past 53 years, Coral Springs Youth Soccer (CSYS) has provided recreational soccer to young people of all athletic abilities in the city. The program is run by volunteers and has around 2,000 players aged 4 to 20, according to Michael Anderson, vice president of CSYS.
McKeone compared the relationship between the city and the CSYS to be like a long marriage that has developed some issues. Travel soccer is usually more competitive and requires substantial time and a financial commitment from families. CSYS offers about three months of competition while travel teams are in operation for most of the year, he said.
Mayor Scott Brook asked whether the current CSYS and a travel program could work together. One concern was that it might be difficult for two programs with different leaders.
