The Coral Springs High School varsity baseball team was off to an incredible start but unfortunately had their season cut short.
The Colts had won seven of the first eight games. Two of their most exciting wins came against Pompano Beach High School 5-4 in extra innings as well as Coral Glades 2-1.
They also had blowout wins against both Hollywood Hills and Dillard, where they scored a combined 34 runs in the two games. A large part of the contribution came from a group of nine seniors.
“All nine of this year’s senior class will go on to become better men, and all do something good with there futures,” said Head Coach Michael Federman, who added, “I will miss the time we shared and the time that was unfortunately taken from us.”
Four are moving on to play collegiate baseball. Jimi Berisko, who was planning on attending Cleveland Community College with Chris DeVarona, but decided to switch to Keiser University.
Both players were members of the varsity team for three seasons and were both hitting over .333 this year.
Marvin Lopez is committed to Allegheny College, and Lohan Taylor plans on attending Fairmont State College.
This duo was on the team for all four years of high school. Lopez had his best season in 2018, where he hit a home run a drive in 13 runs. For Taylor, he had 11 hits in 18 at-bats this year, with six of them going for extra bases.
The five other seniors on the team were Garrett Drew, Gavin Roberts, Michael Phelps, Ryan Monakey, and Dominic Melazzi.
Drew, Roberts, and Phelps combined for 17 RBI’s. Monakey added four as well and threw seven innings in his varsity career. Melazzi saw occasional playing time as an infielder.
Despite losing a very talented group, Coral Springs High School will return with a talented team next season, highlighted by Alex Christmas and Tyler Federman on the mound. Three sophomores and one freshman also return after gaining valuable experience with the varsity team.
