When the school board officially approved the project Tuesday, the friends and family of J.P. Taravella’s late athletic director, Jason Stein, realized their dream of building a memorial field in his honor.
After a battle with COVID-19 in 2020, Coach Stein ended a veteran career in training high school athletes, especially baseball players.
Shortly after his death, friends and family of the 46-year-old coach began planning an extensive renovation to the school’s field.
According to a statement from J.P. Taravella, after two years of seeking approvals from Broward County and the school board, the project has a formal green light to finish what it started.
“We are so proud of this moment, TODAY officially approved by the board to name our baseball field after our beloved Jason Stein. Thank you to everyone who made this happen today. You know who you are,” a representative with J.P. Taravella said in a Tweet.
Renovation organizer, Emily Brown, said the project, which includes personalized memorial bricks laid respectfully around the ‘Stein’s Heart’ memorial plaque, should be complete in two to four years.
Brick donations are ongoing and can be purchased online at J.P. Taravella’s fundraising site, ‘Jason Stein Memorial Baseball Field.’
A student brick costs $26 and will be closer to the bleachers. Premium bricks nearer to the ‘Stein’s Heart’ memorial plaque go as high as $166.
Number 19 for Taravella’s Trojans team, Stein’s baseball uniform may be retired, but its dedication to the future ‘Jason Stein Memorial Field’ promises to be a legacy for all time.
