The Coral Springs Charter wrestling team had a strong showing at the weekend tournament, with several members finishing in the top five.
Hunter Perez, a senior headed to the US Marine Corps after graduation, finished in second place with a 5-1 record. His brother, freshman Elijah Perez, finished in fifth place with a 5-4 record.
Peter Mocco also had a great tournament, finishing in third place. Eddie Shmandura and Preston Lindsay finished fourth, and Jaiden Valentin and Keon Taylor finished fifth. As a team, the Panthers finished in sixth place out of 13 teams.
The team’s success was particularly special for Coach Eric Perez, who was able to watch his sons Hunter and Elijah shine on the mat.
“It means the world to me to not only be able to have the opportunity to coach my sons but also to see them have such great success,” Eric said.
“The team continues to impress me on a daily basis. Their work ethic and desire to get better is an amazing thing to watch. I am very privileged to be able to watch them continuously improve.”
Next, CSC will compete in the Regional Duals on Jan. 12. The Panthers qualified for this after finishing second in the District Duals in December. CSC will then participate in the Coral Springs Duals on Jan. 13-14 before Senior Day on Jan. 19 against Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
