The Coral Springs Charter softball team is back — and through two games at the South Florida Challenge Preseason Classic, the Panthers have made it clear they are contenders once again.
“We have a solid roster top to bottom:, Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “A good balance of veteran players and younger kids. They all know the standard our program expects. If we stay healthy and gel as a unit, I think we’ll be a top-tier team that can beat anyone.”
CSC opened play with a 6-3 victory over Western High School, a team that reached the State Semifinals last season. Alyson Vincze set the tone immediately, leading off the game with a single and later scoring on an RBI double from Leah Rutherford. Gio Gurgel delivered a two-run double in the third inning to extend the lead, while Cam Thiele, Amaya Martinez, and Shea Toth each drove in a run to round out the scoring.
Courtney Wahlbrink was sharp in the circle, tossing four shutout innings and striking out four. Jazzy Chung entered in the fifth and worked around trouble to keep Western off the board. The Wildcats scored three runs in the sixth, but the Panthers held on to secure the 6-3 win.
CSC then faced reigning State Champion Doral Academy, last season’s third-ranked team in the nation. Both teams plated their only runs in the first inning, and that would be all the offense in a tightly contested matchup.
Vincze once again sparked the lineup, drawing a leadoff walk and eventually scoring on a passed ball for the Panthers’ lone run. Thiele finished with two hits, while Gurgel added a base knock. Wahlbrink dominated after the opening frame, firing five scoreless innings and finishing with eight strikeouts in an impressive performance against one of the state’s top programs.
The Panthers are coming off a 23-win season that ended in the Regional Final against Somerset Academy and will officially open the regular season on February 24 against Oxbridge Academy at 4 p.m. The Thunderwolves went 17-8 last season before falling in the Regional Semifinals to Westminster Christian High School.
