Black Rock Bar & Grill in Coral Springs has temporarily closed following a “falling out” between corporate and one of its franchisees, as well as two failed health inspections, Coral Springs Talk has learned.
Highly touted upon its grand opening at 2554 N. University Dr., in April 2023, the grill-your-own-steaks restaurant has been plagued by problems. In September, state health inspectors ordered the eatery closed for a second time after an inspection uncovered ten violations, including the presence of dead rodents, rodent droppings, food storage directly on the floor, and improper separation of raw animal products from ready-to-eat food.
In June, the restaurant was initially ordered closed after 14 violations were identified including flying insects, inadequate sanitary precautions, and food storage concerns, state authorities said.
In addition to the inspection issues, Black Rock corporate encountered problems with one of the franchisees at its Coral Springs location. The eatery recently closed, but the shutdown is expected to be temporary, with a reopening expected under new ownership, said Jeff Cox, Director of Operations for Black Rock Bar & Grill.
“The plan for the restaurant is to have it reopen,” Cox said Tuesday. “We did have a falling out with one of our franchisees…We’re just working through what new ownership would look like there.”
Cox said one of the local partners in the franchise had resigned.
“Between the health inspections and a fray between ownership down there, we definitely want to be able to reopen with fresh leadership and ownership and be able to…regain the trust of the community. I think it’s in everybody’s interest that we do temporarily shut down and reorganize and be able to open back up in a proper fashion.”
Coral Springs Talk learned of the restaurant’s closure when a tipster identifying as a local Black Rock employee emailed us to say the Coral Springs location was “not paying employees and abruptly closing its doors.”
“We have not been paid for our work for the past two weeks and cannot get in contact with any type of authority or HR to resolve this matter,” the tipster wrote on Nov. 30.
Responding to the tipster’s complaint, Cox on Tuesday said: “We did work with our franchisees down there to make sure everybody got paid.”
No reopening date has been announced for the restaurant.
The first Black Rock Bar & Grill opened in 2010 in Hartland, Michigan, and the chain has since expanded to at least 17 locations.
