Dr. Danielle Bradley, who teaches a Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) English General Paper course to ninth graders at Coral Glades High School, is a finalist for the Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Award.
The award is given in a global competition in which a student, parent, or colleague can nominate a current teacher for something positive they have done.
Cambridge receives more than 12,000 nominations from educators around the world, making it especially meaningful to be selected as one of just 10 teachers in the United States and 90 globally. The panel of judges will announce global winners on April 27, with one teacher selected from each of the nine global regions. One global winner is then selected, according to Bradley.
“What makes the award more impactful is that the nominations are submitted by students and their families,” she said, adding that what she values most about teaching Cambridge courses, particularly English General Paper, is the opportunity to develop students’ critical thinking and analytical writing skills.
Helping students explore real-world issues across a range of topics and encouraging students to engage in thoughtful discussion and reasoned debate are important to Bradley. “The course teaches students way more than a traditional ninth-grade English class.”
From an early age, Bradley has been attracted to the school environment. “As a child, I would line up my stuffed animals and dolls and ‘teach’ lessons using a small chalkboard, already inspired by the educators I admired growing up. Those early experiences shaped my decision to pursue a career in teaching,” she said.
Bradley loves working with students at Coral Glades. “What I find most rewarding about teaching is witnessing students’ growth over time and seeing young people mature, develop confidence, and acquire new skills,” she said.
Her 25-year teaching career has been positive. “Teaching freshmen is the optimal grade in my opinion because I help build a foundation, and then three years later I watch my students cross the stage at graduation,” she said.
Bradley loves hearing success stories from the young people she has taught. “When former students reach out to thank me for my part in their journeys, that is my best experience,” she said.
