The Coral Springs Charter softball team may have started its season later than some other programs, but the Panthers have quickly found their rhythm.
Following a strong preseason tournament that included a win over Western High School, CSC battled unbeaten Oxbridge Academy in a tightly contested matchup before falling 1-0 in extra innings. The Panthers responded in impressive fashion, earning a 6-1 win over Park Vista Community High School and then a 6-0 shutout against Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
Courtney Wahlbrink tossed four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six. Jazzy Chung handled the final nine outs to secure the shutout. Leah Rutherford drove in two runs, while Cameron Thiele and Chloe Koenig each added RBIs.
CSC carried that momentum into another dominant performance, defeating Somerset Academy 9-0. Wahlbrink was outstanding once again, surrendering only one hit over five innings with 10 strikeouts before Sophia Diaz recorded the final six outs. Gio Gurgel powered the offense with three hits, including a home run, and finished with three RBIs. Rutherford and Brielle Martinelli each drove in two runs, while Thiele and Chung added one RBI apiece.
“Offense has started to come along,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. “When the top of our order finds a way on base, our lineup is dangerous. And Wahlbrink has been fantastic as usual. That, plus an airtight defense, and we have a chance against anyone.”
Coral Glades opened the season 5-0 but has since dropped two straight following losses to Cardinal Gibbons and Western High School. The Jaguars managed just one run combined in those games and will look to bounce back against Pembroke Pines Charter on Thursday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Coral Springs High School earned its second win of the season with an 18-1 victory over Deerfield Beach High School. They are set to face Blanche Ely High School on Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m. J. P. Taravella started 3-1 but has since lost two straight after falling to Charles W. Flanagan and McArthur High School. Their earlier wins came against Piper, South Broward, and Coral Springs High School. The Trojans will next play Deerfield Beach High School on March 9 at 6:30 p.m.
