Coral Springs High School had an incredible week, with four varsity teams recording wins before a big matchup with Marjory Stoneman Douglas this week.
The boys basketball team came into the week without a win and left with three after recording victories against Fort Lauderdale, J.P. Taravella, and Dillard by 18.3 points.
Head Coach Devin Barta says he is really pleased with how his team responded to the start of the season.
“We have played much better in our last three wins, and it has been a team effort as we have had four to five players in double figures scoring each night,” Barta said. “Everyone is playing unselfishly, and it is helping our performance.”
The Colts are set to play MSD on Wednesday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles are 4-3 this year with wins over Cardinal Gibbons, Olympic Heights, Monarch, and Charles W Flanagan High School. The Colts won 70-55 in the only meeting last year season.
The girls basketball team continues to shine after their long playoff run last year. The Colts are 5-1 this head, with their only loss against Blanche Ely High School.
They played in two games this past week, winning 68-55 over Dillard and then dominating Fort Lauderdale High School 70-11 on December 7.
Their game against MSD is scheduled for Wednesday, December 13 at 6 p.m. The Eagles beat Monarch and Hallandale this season and are just one victory away from matching their win total from last year.
The boys soccer team is having one of their best seasons in years and went 2-0-1 and has five wins this year. They lost 7-0 to South Broward but responded with a draw against Everglades before beating Hollywood Hills High School. Thanakrit Lakeo scored a pair of goals while Camden Hulse and Nicolas Morendo.
Christian Arango had two helpers, one from Samuel Giraldo and Jorge Flores. Steven Calcano played 70 minutes in net and made four saves, only allowing one goal, while Marcus Galindo had one save in 10 minutes.
The Colts play Hallandale High School on Tuesday, December 12 at 7 p.m. before their matchup with MSD on Thursday, December 14 at 6 p.m. The Eagles are 3-2-2 this year, have beaten the Colts, and won 6-1 in last year’s matchup.
The girls soccer team is riding high with a three-game winning streak following victories over South Broward, Everglades, and Hollywood Hills High School. They outscored their opponents 7-2 in those games, with Andrea Orjuela and Fabiana Villegas Farias scoring in all three games. Stephanie Calcano added one, while Calcano, Orjuela, Luis Pereira, Brianna McDonald, and Kayla Hillard all had assists.
The Colts will play Hallandale High School on Tuesday, December 12 at 5 p.m. before facing MSD on Thursday, December 12 at 5 p.m. The Eagles are 5-1 this year and won 4-0 the last time these teams met.
The Coral Springs High School wrestling team competed in a tournament on Saturday, led by Shai Keery, to earn fourth.
“I have become a better person because of hard wrestling practices,” he said. Javier Romeus placed sixth, and Jaylan Brown came in seventh.
“It takes determination and dedication to do well in wrestling. During a competition, you are on your own,” Brown said.
Previously, the Colts went 2-1 in dual meets with wins against Charles W. Flanagan and Plantation but lost to Fort Lauderdale High School.
“We have a young team with seven first-year wrestlers,” Head Coach Dan Jacob said. “Because of some problems with the wrestling room, we have to practice in the school cafeteria. We will improve and win later in the season.”
The Colts will continue their season and look to make another deep run in the postseason.
