Coral Springs High School has a new state champion.
Olivia Higgins, a junior, took first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2.09 minutes at the 4A State Championship in Jacksonville on Saturday.
The Coral Springs High School girls’ track and field team finished fifth overall among all competing schools at the championship.
Samanta Bandres Chourio, a junior, took third place in the 400-meter hurdles at 60 seconds and earned 6th place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.15 seconds.
The 4X400 girls’ relay team placed third with a time of 3.52 minutes. Team members include Lydia Gentilhomme, Destinee Cole, Higgins, and Chourio.
For the Colts’ boys, Benjamin Joseph earned fourth place in the triple jump with 14.26 meters, according to Coach Joshua Fulton.
“Our goal is to build a strong program, and we have some very talented athletes,” said Coach Joshua Fulton. “We will continue to improve as everyone on the team works to get better.”
The J.P. Taravella girls’ track and field team performed well at the state championship meet. Patricia Costa earned third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.80, a personal best and school record, according to coach Dawn Spann.
The J.P. Taravella girls’ 4×400 relay team placed eighth overall among all girls’ relay teams with a time of 3.56. Team members include Olivia Noel, Jocelyn Hart, Timaya Johnson, and Costa.
Olivia Noel earned eighth place in the long jump with 5.4 meters.
Spann said, “We have some very good athletes on our team who have performed well this season. Costa worked hard and was very focused during the championship meet. We took 12 young ladies to the state meet this year.”
The J.P. Taravella boys’ 4×800 relay team finished sixth overall among all boys’ relay teams with a time of 7.52. Team members include Joshua Reneau, JahRee Pierre, Scardy Fils, and Ali Mustafa.

The Coral Springs Charter Track and Field Team excelled at the 2A state championships on May 7.
The girls’ 4X100 finished in eighth place with a new school record of 49.22. Team members include Ava Dorvil, Reagan Pinkston, Jordan Sawyer, and Sydney Leith.
Jordan Sawyer finished ninth in the triple jump, and Giana Barnes earned sixth in the 400 meters.
For the boys’ team, Justin Laroche finished 12th in the 400 meters, and Will Urena earned 14th in the triple jump, according to Coach Brantley Barr.
“We had a strong meet, marking a great close to our season,” he said.
