The high school swim season is officially underway, with four teams impressing to start the year.
Coral Springs High School won in their first meet of the season on Wednesday against Deerfield Beach High School.
Head Coach Morgan Wizst, who is in her third season coaching at Coral Springs High School, says it has been amazing to grow the team from five to 20 swimmers.
“I love that all of the swimmers are getting the word out and happy to be on the team,” Wizst said. “They truly are amazing kids and amazing teammates. Not only did our team grow, but we also had our first swim meets against Deerfield Beach High School, and we won. The boys pulled through amazingly, and so did our girls! So excited to see what the future awaits.”
Coral Springs Charter swam well but fell against Fort Lauderdale High School with a score of 192-155. The Panthers won seven races, with the 200 medley boys’ relay placing first at 1:46 with Anthony Palumbo, John Albornoz, Brian Hamilton, and Christopher Chaison.
The girls’ 400 free relay also won with Alejandra Gil-Restrepo, Grace Weeks, Amanda Robins, and Mariana Montes. Montes, Hamilton, Chaison, Palumbo, and John Albornoz individually won their races. They also had 15 second-place finishes and eight third-place results.
Coral Glades recently competed against Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Cypress Bay High School. The meet was canceled after 12 events, but the boy’s team trailed the Eagles 47-25 and the Lightning 43-25. The girls team trailed MSD 49-23 and Cypress Bay 53-19.
J.P. Taravella began their season with a match against Pines Charter and Miramar High School. They have had a strong run of late, sending as many as five swimmers to the State Championship two years ago.
