Two J.P. Taravella High School chorus members earned special recognition.
Benjamin Vela and Aubree Fogle performed at the Florida Music Education Association Professional Learning Conference in Tampa, January 8-11.
According to Morgan Healey, director of the chorus, qualifying for an all-state chorus is a significant accomplishment. The students had to pass a written and sight-reading test and sing prepared sections of various songs.
Vela, 17, a senior and resident of Coral Springs, loved the experience. He qualified for the reading chorus and spent the weekend in intensive rehearsals. He began his choir career with the Florida Singing Sons in third grade and enjoyed working with talented musicians. “It was a wonderful experience, and we had a great director,” he said.
Fogle, 15, a sophomore in Coral Springs, liked singing with dedicated musicians. She qualified for the all-girls chorus and participated in long and intensive rehearsals, followed by a performance. “It was a wonderful experience and with many good singers there. We worked with an awesome director,” said Fogle.
According to Healey, the Taravella chorus has many dedicated members. On October 24-26, 2024, five members participated in the Florida American Choral Directors Association conference in Orlando. After rehearsing together, they gave a performance.
Kailani Quintana, 15, a freshman from Tamarac, was one of the five who participated in the FLACDA. She enjoyed the opportunity to rehearse and sing at a high level.
“I am very proud of them for passing their audition, and I hope that they learned things to bring back to the classroom,” said Healey.
Instructors also participated in sessions specific to what they teach and had an opportunity to learn and spend time with experts.
