The J.P. Taravella High School bowling team won the boys’ district championship in Boca Raton on October 21.
Zachary Kimbrell won the boys’ competition with a total score of 785 over three games. According to coach Greg Mason, Bryce Collins took third place and earned a score of 656 over three games.
“They bowled their rear ends off all day and worked very hard to win. I am happy and proud,” said Mason.
Zachary Kimbrell, Marvin Nixon, Byrce Collins, Chyanne Vanwinkle, and Hunter Woodruff are among the Taravella bowlers traveling to the state championship in Orlando on Tuesday, October 29.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) team came in fourth. Coach Mike Gregory was disappointed that the team did not qualify for the state championship but was proud of their performance. His son Bryce qualified as an individual and shot 635.
The Coral Springs Charter Girls’ team earned second place in the girls’ division and will compete in the state championship.
Under the tournament format, each competitor bowled three games. The top four teams based on those games were entered into Baker games, where each team member bowls two out of ten frames.
It was a best-of-five double-elimination format. Taravella defeated MSD in the first Baker game, and the Trojans moved on to play Park Vista. MSD then played Boca Raton. MSD lost to Boca Raton and Taravella lost to Park Vista. According to Gregory, Taravella defeated Boca Raton and played Park Vista a second time for the championship, which the Trojans won.
