Coral Springs was well-represented in the Regional Championship, with five teams in action, while several bowlers competed in the Senior BCAA Championship.
Boys Basketball
Coral Springs High School and Coral Glades competed in the Regional Quarterfinals in basketball on February 15. The Colts, who went 20-4 during the regular season, were stunned in their opening District Playoff Game against Cypress Bay High School. Still, CSHS qualified for Regionals and was seeded second against the Jaguars before beating them 54-41.
Coral Glades finished the season 14-14, while the Colts fell 62-51 against Miami High School on Wednesday. The Colts had a record-setting season, which featured the team winning their first Big-Eight Championship in school history.
Girls Basketball
On the girls’ side, the Coral Glades soccer team ended their season following a 7-0 loss against Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The Lady Jaguars were seeded eighth in Regionals and finished the season 9-8-2.
The CSC girls basketball team was also seeded eighth in the Regional Playoff Game and lost 60-20 against Sports Leadership and Management to finish the year at 15-7. Coming off a District Championship, the CSHS girls basketball team lost 46-37 against Miami Palmetto Senior High School in their first Regional Game. The Lady Colts went 15-7 this year under Head Coach Brenton Hankerson.
Bowling
Coral Springs student-athletes also competed in the Senior BCAA Championship, highlighted by a pair of third-place finishes.
Nick Bulzomo of J.P. Taravella bowled 246, 235, 255, and 179 to finish with a 915. Coral Springs Charter’s Danielle Lucas bowled 117, 176, 147, and 174 to finish with a 614 and then finished third. She says she had a blast and loved bowling for Coral Springs Charter.
“I’ve been bowling since 2019, and this tournament was the best wrap-up for my high school career,” Lucas said. “I enjoyed my time on the team and my teammates’ support. I’m for sure going to miss that. I’m excited to see what my future holds for my bowling career.”
Braiden Myers of J.P. Taravella also had a great tournament, finishing with 758 pins, Jeremy Smith knocking down 720, and CSC’s Leonel Nieto recording 540. For the girls, Coral Springs High School’s Kayltnn Cooper and Alexandra Mendoza knocked down 860 pins, with Gianna Candido of Coral Springs Charter registering an average of 105.6 per round.
