The District Championship wrestling tournament had four schools from Coral Springs competing on February 16 at Fort Lauderdale High School.
Coral Springs High School finished second, competing against Marjory Stoneman Douglas J.P. Taravella, Fort Lauderdale, Monarch, Deerfield Beach, and Coral Glades. The girls wrestling team had two girls qualify for the Regional Tournament. with junior Vanessa Alexandre and Senior Angelina Brown.
J.P. Taravella finished in third place, with Jacob Rosen taking first place for the Trojans. Tariq Qaiyim, Damian Morales, and Victor Dixon were runner-ups. Abraham Ballesteros, Caiden Canales, and Chris Cenoble placed third, and Giovanni Perez came in fourth.
Carlos Garcia Ruiz shined for Coral Glades, coming in first place. He previously won the BCAA Championship earlier this year.
“He wrestled great,” said Head Coach Cam Thomas. “To be the first district champion in years at Coral Glades shows how hard he worked to get there. It all started last year. Once wrestling was over, he went into lacrosse and transitioned to football, which kept him in shape to make this run for Kissimmee. “
The Coral Springs Charter varsity wrestling team finished second, competing against Cardinal Gibbons, Pine Crest, American Heritage (Delray Beach), and St. Andrews. Preston Lindsay won the lone championship, while Asher Daly, Logan Bosworth, Hunter Perez, Peter Mocco, Keon Taylor, and Owyn Vargas came in second.
The Panthers also received third place finished from Andrew Ridge and Elijah Perez, along with sixth grader Brandon Hankerson coming in fourth.
“I’m really happy with the team’s overall performance, said Head Coach Eric Perez. “Everyone wrestled tough, and they are getting better every day.”
Next, CSHS, Coral Glades will compete in Regionals on Feb. 24-25 at South Dade Senior high School, while CSC will wrestle at Cardinal Gibbons High School.
