Olivia Higgins is one of the leading student-athletes at Coral Springs High School.
A junior, she won second place at the recent cross-country district championship and is now preparing for the upcoming regional championship in Miami.
“I had a personal record, and I hope to improve at regionals. I think I can finish in the top five,” said Higgins. “To be a successful distance runner, you have to be consistent and practice every day.”
A track team member, Higgins ran the 800 meters and last year qualified for the state championship meet, where she finished third in the 800 and first at the district and regional championships.
“I would like to run for the University of Florida track team,” said Higgins, who has a 4.9 grade point average and loves to study Spanish.
Coach Khiro Hoilett, an alumnus of the Coral Springs cross country and track team, believes Higgins will qualify for the state championship. He also thinks the boys’ team, which earned third place in the district championship, will do well. “The whole team qualified for the regional championship, and they have been pushing each other to improve,” said Hoilett.
Matthew Wykpisz, a senior who earned fourth at districts, has also been a leader on the team.
