The Coral Glades–J.P. Taravella rivalry took center stage this week as the two schools met in a mix of regular-season and postseason matchups across basketball and soccer.
On the basketball court, the Coral Glades boys team earned a decisive 79–54 Senior Night victory over the Trojans. Jamari Bolden, Kyler Theophile, and Darrion Livingston were honored as the Jaguars improved to 14–6 on the season heading into a weekend tournament. J.P. Taravella entered the matchup at 13–5 after edging Piper High School 57–54 earlier in the week and now sits at 13–6. They will travel to face Key West High School on Saturday, January 24, at 7:30 p.m., before closing out its home schedule on Tuesday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m. against Nova High School. The Coral Glades girls basketball team also secured a rivalry win, edging J.P. Taravella 32–30 in a tightly contested game. Seniors Janaiya Germain, Rachel Celicourt, and Delaina LeGrand were recognized prior to tipoff. The Jaguars will travel to Westminster Academy on Tuesday, January 27, at 5:30 p.m. Westminster enters the matchup with a 3–10 record, with wins over Atlantic Christian, Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School, and Dade Christian Academy. J.P. Taravella dropped to 7–5 and will face Monarch High School on Monday, January 26, at 6 p.m.
In postseason soccer action, the Coral Glades girls team advanced with a 1–0 victory over J.P. Taravella, ending the Trojans’ season at 0–10–2. The Jaguars went on to face Marjory Stoneman Douglas, where their season concluded with a 7–0 loss, finishing the year at 10–7–1.
The boys’ soccer rivalry matchup featured more scoring, but Coral Glades again came out on top with a 3–1 victory. J.P. Taravella fell to 9–9–4 and awaits word on a potential regional berth. The Jaguars advanced to face Spanish River Community High School and earned another 3–1 win, securing a spot in the District Final.
Coral Glades will play Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the Championship Game on Tuesday, January 27, at 6 p.m. The Eagles are the top seed in the district after posting an 8–1–2 regular-season record and defeating Western High School 6–1.
Elsewhere on the field, the Coral Springs Charter girls soccer team closed the regular season on a 14-game winning streak after starting the year 0–3, defeating Calvary Christian Academy 3–0. However, the Panthers were shut out 3–0 by Cardinal Gibbons High School on Thursday and now await their regional opponent. The CSC boys team also fell to Cardinal Gibbons, 1–0, finishing the regular season at 7–8–5.
Coral Springs High School’s boys soccer team earned a 2–0 victory over Fort Lauderdale High School. Ethan Perez and Othneil Thomas scored the goals, with assists from Angel Castillo and Lucas Vasquez, while Baron Celik made four saves to secure the shutout. The Colts, though, lost 3-1 against Deerfield Beach High School and dropped to 8-2-4 before a potential spot in Regionals.
The Coral Springs High girls’ soccer team, seeded fifth, saw its season end with a 4–3 loss to Piper High School, finishing the year 2–8–3. Their two wins this season came against Hallandale High School and Boyd H. Anderson High School.
